In the last few weeks, there has been such an incredible amount of "Earth Day" celebrations, festivals, seminars, and exhibitions that it is virtually impossible to have missed one somewhere. Rising energy prices have surely helped increase awareness of the natural environment and the importance of reducing one's carbon footprint, and corporate America is definitely in on the plan.
To address the business side of the equation, CB Richard Ellis, a global real estate services firm, recently merged two different methods of bringing energy conservation to light. The company has pledged to replace the 177,000 incandescent light bulbs used by buildings in its massive corporate and property management portfolio with energy efficient compact fluorescents(CFLs).
This is part of the Change a Light, Change the World Campaign developed by ENERGY STAR, a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. The idea, of course, centers on "helping individuals and companies save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices."
The second part of CB Richard Ellis's approach was to make this initiative part of the annual Take Our Kids to Work Day on April 24. Each participating child was given a CFL, an incredibly direct and literal approach to the concept of bringing energy efficiency home.
CB Richard Ellis's estimates that it will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 72,000,000 pounds and save $4.6 million annually by making this small change in the electric use of its portfolio. And there is no telling how much more will be saved by the education offered to these kids.
