What image do you conjure when you hear the name Levittown? Do you think of America's first planned suburban community, the one with the $5,000 homes built for returning WWII veterans, or is what comes to mind rows and rows of near-identical houses? Levittown spawned an entire building industry in the 1940s and 1950s that resulted in the suburbia we know today.
Back then, Long Island's Levittown was viewed as the future of home ownership in America. Of course, over time, it has also been credited with the creation of the suburban sprawl currently considerd one of the many elements that have contributed to our enormous national carbon footprint.
But as the old saying goes, "everything old is new again," and Levittown is once again altering the American landscape. The town has just launched a program called "Green Levittown," which hopes to persuade the residents of its 17,000 homes to upgrade by increasing fuel efficiency and cutting down on fuel bills.
Nassau County officials, along with local environmentalists and businesses are the parties involved in bringing this all together. The first suburban community created in America is once again at the forefront of change.
