When it comes to exploring different ways in which companies can save energy, we often forget about the simple, tried-and-true methods—especially a little old-fashioned practice called conservation.
At home, saving energy can be as simple as heightening self-awareness of our own consumption. But for commercial properties, effectively managing energy usage is a bit more complex than walking through hallways flipping off light switches.
Enter Teaneck-headquartered Encelium Technologies, a company committed to being the “pre-eminent lighting control and energy management system globally” through its mold-breaking Energy Control System (ECS) technology, says Chief Operating Officer Terry Mocherniak.
“We believe that we have absolutely industry leading lighting control technology with an exclusive focus on energy management,” says Mocherniak.
Founded in 2001 by Mocherniak and chief technology officer Mark Hoffknecht, Encelium was initially funded by a trio of venture capital firms. However, before enlisting the firms, Mocherniak managed to pool together $250,000 from friends and family for Encelium’s first beta installation. After entering the U.S. market in 2004, sales have nearly doubled each year. Encelium is currently budgeting sales of about $8.5 million.
And with Encelium being approached by “several large global players in the lighting and building automation industries,” says Mocherniak, the company’s goal of reaching $100 million in revenues doesn’t seem so outlandish.
While upfront costs for almost any greening project (solar panels, geothermal wells, etc.) often scare potential buyers away, Mocherniak promises that no building will be left waiting long for payback from ECS—typically, he says, Encelium is delivering a 20-to-50 percent return on investment, not to mention a 50-to-75 percent savings on lighting costs, in just two to five years. An ECS installation can also bolster a building’s LEED credits, as businesses across New Jersey and beyond adopt sustainability initiatives.
