LOS ANGELES-- Shangri-La Construction has announced that its first project, Hangar 25, located at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, California, was selected a winner of the Airports Council International - North America (ACI-NA) 2009 Environmental Achievement Awards.
The ACI-NA recognized Hanger 25 and the Bob Hope Airport in the Environmental Management Award Category because of its distinction as the world's first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum certified aviation facility. Hangar 25's key features that ensured LEED's highest certification include a solar-powered roof system that supplies at least 110% (and often double) of all necessary power needs, including clean powering of aircraft auxiliary power units (APUs) in use while aircraft are on the ground, electric tow and maintenance vehicles and office operations.
Shangri-La built the hangar in conjunction with Avjet Corporation, a worldwide private aviation company that established Hangar 25 as its headquarters for large aircraft operations. Hangar 25 helps Avjet reduce major costs and carbon challenges related to its ground operations by reducing jet fuel consumption, utilizing electric tow and maintenance vehicles instead of traditional internal combustion-powered versions, and diminishing operational electricity usage.
Additional sustainable innovations that helped the facility earn Platinum certification include a HI-FOG water-based fire suppression system, evaporative coolers and fans to manage temperature control, low-emitting materials and furnishings, low water plumbing fixtures and landscaping featuring native desert plants and no-mow, no-water SYNLawn(TM) grass, and daylight harvesting through strategic design including a diamond-polished concrete floor that reflects light and does not use toxic sealants that require regular reapplication and maintenance.
