Sweetwater Construction Corp. Receives 2008 NJ Historic Preservation Award By Betsy Kraat

CRANBURY, N.J.--Sweetwater Construction Corp., a recognized leader in New Jersey construction, management and general contracting, recently received a 2008 New Jersey Historic Preservation Award for its American Metro Center project in Hamilton, N.J.

The New Jersey Historic Sites Council and the Department of Environmental Protection's Historic Preservation Office presented the award during a ceremony earlier this year at the New Jersey State House in Trenton, N.J.

The New Jersey Historic Preservation Awards Program, now in its 18th year, is held annually during National Historic Preservation month to recognize the outstanding efforts of individuals, organizations and government agencies to preserve the state's valuable resources. The awards program also increases public awareness of historic preservation and acknowledges volunteer contributions to preserve historic resources.

Sweetwater reconstructed the former Thomas Maddock's Sons Company, more commonly known as the American Standard Building, from a 750,000-square-foot sanitary manufacturing factory to a 450,000-square-foot Class-A office space. The building maintains original features including brick, glass, boilers and doors, while also incorporating terracotta tile exteriors, mosaic design work, exposed ceilings and skylights.

The American Metro Center, located on 112 acres adjacent to the Hamilton train station, now houses 12 businesses and includes a full-service cafeteria, fitness center, conference center and parking space.

When built in 1925, the site was the largest and most modern sanitary pottery manufacturing plant erected near Trenton. This re-use project demonstrates the viability of 20th century industrial buildings and serves as an example of how former industrial sites can be transformed for modern day uses. It also illustrates how economic and environmental sustainability can be achieved through thoughtful historic preservation.
