PARAMUS, N.J.-- Just in time for the holiday season, a sampling of the "Livable Communities" project created by some of New Jersey's brightest sixth-grade students is scheduled to be on display from Monday, Nov. 17 to Sunday, Nov. 30 at IKEA.
The New Jersey Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, which created the "Livable Communities" student project, will host a reception for the participating students and their parents, as well as AIA-NJ members, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19 in the café area of the store, located at 100 IKEA Drive, Paramus.
As part of a nationwide celebration of the national American Institute of Architects' 150th anniversary in 2007, AIA-NJ hosted the "Blueprint for America" program. AIA-NJ had 150 volunteer member architects speak to 10,000 sixth-grade students at 150 schools throughout New Jersey.
Ben Lee, AIA, of NK Architects in Morristown, N.J., created an interactive PowerPoint presentation of an imaginary town to help students better understand the types of 'blueprints' that exist. Lee's imaginary town included a body of water, a street grid, train station, highways, open space and various buildings, such as offices, schools, churches, stores, civic buildings, industrial plants and single- and multi-family housing developments.
The students, with help from AIA-NJ visiting architects, worked together and created their own "livable community." The innovative student projects were also on display in June at the New Jersey Statehouse Annex in Trenton, N.J.
