LIC Welcomes Grocer By Betsy Kraat

LONG ISLAND CITY, NY-- Food Cellars, the first supermarket in Long Island City, opened yesterday.

The addition of a supermarket within walking distance will revolutionize Queens West, where 5,000 residents previously lugged their groceries in from Manhattan or Brooklyn on crowded subways, or ordered online for delivery. Food Cellars will not only be convenient for residents, but will help decrease the city's overall carbon footprint.

Food Cellars will offer all natural and organic foods, as well as a bakery, and a full selection of gourmet prepared foods.

The store occupies 22,000 sf on the ground floor of one of Rockrose Development Corp.’s rental buildings at East Coast. In all, 74 acres are set aside for development in Queens West, just one-stop from Grand Central Station. The opening of a full-service supermarket marks a big step in the evolution of this neighborhood.
