Brokers Build Raises Funds for Green Homes By Betsy Kraat

NEW YORK-- Brokers Build, an organization of New York City’s top real estate brokers dedicated to raising funds for Habitat for Humanity – New York City, has set an ambitious target—to get 1,000 of their colleagues to raise $1,000 each for affordable homes.

To date, Brokers build has raised $125,000 towards its goal of $1 million, which will fund 11 homes in Habitat-NYC’s Atlantic Avenue complex in Ocean Hill-Brownsville, Brooklyn, now under construction. Brokers who raise a minimum of $500 by the end of July also will be invited to a special Brokers Build volunteer day on Wed., July 30, where they will have the opportunity to help build the Habitat homes.

The Habitat-NYC project, at 1870 Eastern Parkway on the corner of Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, is comprised of three, four-story buildings with 41 homes total, making it Habitat-NYC’s largest project to date. The projected is being constructed with energy-efficient and environmentally friendly materials and designed to qualify for a LEED rating, which will save the homeowners 30 percent or more on their energy bills.

This is an excellent project through Habitat to provide multiple homes through efficient multi-unit buildings. The generosity is inspiring. In light of the fact that other opportunities exist for using green materials in new efficient home construction, Habitat and other charitable groups are using modular home technology to create new homes at low prices that are environmentally friendly. Beginning July 20th, MoMA will present 5 commissioned architects showcasing the ability of modular homes to also accommodate design needs while using green materials, cost efficient processes, and time saving construction. Whether it is within the US or abroad, these look to offer very exciting opportunities for environmentally friendly affordable housing.
