Call for Submissions for the ULI-NNJ Land Use Awards By Betsy Kraat

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ--The Northern New Jersey District Council of the Urban Land Institute (ULI-NNJ) has announced that it is seeking submissions of qualified projects or candidates in New Jersey for its 2008 annual Land Use Awards.

ULI is a worldwide organization that provides leadership in the responsible use of land and in creating and sustaining thriving communities by bringing together leaders to exchange best practices. ULI is comprised of developers, builders, property owners, investors, architects, public officials, planners, real estate brokers, appraisers, attorneys, engineers, financiers, academics, students and librarians.

The Land Use Awards were instituted in 2005 to recognize projects that coincide with ULI-NNJ's five key strategic planning issues: sustainable development, mixed-use development, infrastructure/transportation, leadership in public policy and outstanding educators. In addition, special recognition awards may be given at the discretion of the jury. Applications must be submitted before Sept. 15, 2008. The applicants will be notified whether they have won by mid-November and the awards will be announced at the awards banquet at The Heldrich in New Brunswick on Dec. 11, 2008.

"The annual ULI-NNJ Land Use Awards are a great opportunity to showcase excellence in smart land use that has been practiced throughout the year," said Lawrence Jacobs, president of ULI-NNJ. "Smart land use, which is ULI-NNJ's creed, is very important to the continued prosperity and growth of our communities and should not go unrecognized."

In order to qualify, projects must be complete, in stabilized operation and economically viable. Projects and/or candidates must demonstrate a high standard of excellence in the following areas: design, planning, community/ political involvement, construction, economics, sustainability, marketing and management. Projects and/or candidates must also demonstrate resourceful use of land preservation or enhancement of the built environment, contribute to the current and future needs of the community in which the project is located, be innovative and worthy of replication, make responsible use of public and private funds, demonstrate leadership in resolving a public policy issue or meeting a community need.

Applicants should submit a project information statement that includes which award category the project or candidate is addressing, who is making the application and the relationship of the applicant to the proposed candidate or project. For projects, provide the name, address, location, contact information and key project data: gross square footage, size, uses, amenities, open space, density, amount/type of parking, uses of financing and target population. Key project team members should be listed with contact information.

Applicants should also include a narrative statement of no more than three pages describing the goals, objectives, attributes and success in achieving the awards criteria. This should also include the obstacles overcome in achieving the project or personal level of success and what sets this project or person apart in demonstrating eligibility for a ULI-NNJ award.

Lastly the applicants should incorporate images as a separate attachment. An applicant may include up to 20 images that demonstrate the attributes of the project or person. This may be provided in the form of a power point presentation or as separate images of plans, renderings, etc. If there is more than one image on a page, they will be counted separately. Please attribute sources for images with a one-line description.

Applicants should provide 10 hard copies and a CD rom disk with the application. Image files should be provided in jpeg or tiff format. Applications must be postmarked by Sept. 15, 2008, and sent to ULI-NNJ Coordinator, 199 Prospect Ave., P.O. Box 7250, North Arlington, N.J. 07031. For questions, please e-mail coordinator@nnj.uli.org
