NYC Marriott Unveils Microturbine Farm By Betsy Kraat

NEW YORK-- The New York Marriott Downtown unveiled a microturbine farm that it says will help conserve energy and cut costs at the 500-room hotel.

Two PureComfort systems from UTC Power will generate waste heat that can be used for space heating, hot water and air conditioning. The system will be about three times more efficient than a conventional power plant, the company said.

The system will help the hotel avoid roughly 1,700 tons of carbon dioxide emissions and 10 tons of nitrogen oxides, as well as offset some 5,800 megawatt hours of electricity annually.

Marriott mapped its worldwide carbon footpring earlier this month and committed to reducing energy consumption 25 percent by 2017. During the last 10 years, the company said it has replaced 450,000 light bulbs with fluorescent lighting and installed 400,000 low-flow showerheads and toilets.

Gene Coutu, the regional vice president of market operations for the company’s eastern region, expects the installation to play well with the hotel’s eco-minded guests. "Our hotel guests are very aware of hotels' impact on the planet; more and more, they are making hotel choices based upon the company's commitment to environmental practices,” he said.
