NEWARK--Acting Business Administrator Michelle Thomas, State Public Advocate Ronald K. Chen, members of the Newark Lead Poisoning Prevention Task Force and Maple Avenue School Principal Deneen Washington were joined by Maple Avenue students and parents to kick off the City of Newark's “Lead Poisoning Awareness and Prevention Week” during a ceremony at Maple Avenue School today. Newark officials also launched a city-wide tri-lingual multi-media campaign designed to promote awareness about lead poisoning and what parents can do to protect their family. Children who are 6 years of age and younger are at greater risk for lead poisoning.
The first week of June has traditionally been National Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, a nationwide effort to raise awareness of lead dangers in homes and workplaces, and to encourage removal of such hazards from homes and testing of children for signs of lead poisoning. Newark, through its Department of Child and Family Well-Being, maintains an active anti-lead program. Since 2007, the number of Newark children with elevated blood Lead levels dropped from 992 in 2007, to 687 so far last year.
In October 2008, the City of Newark launched the “Model Lead Safe City Initiative,” which partners the City with the Office of the New Jersey Public Advocate to better protect Newark children under the age of six from lead hazards. Under this initiative, Newark has committed itself to achieving goals and objectives defined by the Public Advocate, to reduce lead dangers in homes and incidents of lead poisoning among Newark families, working in partnership with federal, state, county, and non-profit agencies.
Although the sale of lead based paint was banned in 1978, 81 percent of Newark’s housing was built prior to this date. Hence many children in Newark are still exposed to paint with high lead levels. Lead poisoning can cause irreversible, life-long, serious harm including neurological problems, behavioral problems, developmental disabilities, decreased I.Q., growth problems, hearing loss, coma, and sometimes death. Ingestion of lead-based paint by children is the main cause of lead poisoning in the City of Newark.
“Last year the City of Newark received $4 million from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development to abate 250 homes by 2010, and we expect to meet that deadline. We also received funding from the state Department of Health and Senior Services for $743,143. Of that, $229,101 is a Community Development Block Grant for Childhood Lead Poisoning Control programs, while another $173,084 CDBG grant supports Lead-Safe Houses. We are also getting $100,000 from the state Department of Community Affairs for Lead Education and Outreach and in February were awarded a $1.5 Million grant from the Kresge Foundation to be used towards the expansion of our lead-safe housing, education and outreach,” Director Vizcarrondo said in a statement.
Beverly Wilson found out both of her grandchildren had lead poisoning after she brought them to the Department of Child and Family Well-being for a test in 2006. During the ceremony she praised the city for abating the lead from their home and said, “I applaud the Newark Childhood Lead Prevention Team for their efforts to ensure that my 7-year old granddaughter Dymin and my 6-year old grandson Nyjae both received the treatment they needed so they could grow up to be healthy adults. We now live in a lead safe home thanks to their dedication and determination to keep our children safe from lead.”
