NEWARK--Mayor Cory A. Booker, Jon Bon Jovi, Governor Jon Corzine, North Ward Councilman Anibal Ramos, and other local leaders will hold a press conference to announce the HELP USA’s Newark Initiative.
This public-private partnership with Mr. Bon Jovi’s Philadelphia Soul Charitable Foundation, will result in Genesis Apartments, 51 new units of affordable housing for low-income and special-needs persons, which will include ground-breaking environmentally friendly ‘green’ features such as a geothermal heating system, as well as a 2,500 sf community center. The press conference will be held in Newark on Tuesday, September 2, at the corner of Oriental Street and Mt. Pleasant Avenue, at 1 p.m.
As announced, this initiative, based on HELP USA’s supportive housing model, will bring 51 new units of family housing, as well as a unique combination of residential and support services to homeless people living with AIDS. The majority of the residential units will provide rental housing for low-income families who are currently residing in sub-standard and transitional housing facilities throughout Newark - many of whom are single parent households with two to three young children.
