PARAMUS-- Richard Dressel, business manager of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 164, has been named as a “2008 All-Star” by Real Estate Weekly.
The award recognizes outstanding contributions of individuals active in the commercial, industrial and residential markets throughout the New York metropolitan region.
Dressel was acknowledged for spearheading the development and implementation of New Jersey’s first Drug-Free Workforce Program for skilled workers providing building trade services on construction projects throughout the state. The all-encompassing program includes Local 164’s more than 3,900 members as well as traveling electrical workers and telecommunications technicians from other jurisdictions or states.
In addition to elevating jobsite safety, the program yields significant cost-savings, ranging from 8 to 14 percent, in worker’s compensation premiums for contractors and developers. It also enables the Local to immediately respond to requests for drug-tested electricians and telecommunications from New Jersey’s largest corporate entities, including pharmaceutical companies and utility operators.
The Local 164 Drug-Free Workforce Program includes an 11-panel test with baseline testing completed during the first quarter of this year. Thereafter, tests are being administered randomly to 25 percent of the Local’s active workforce annually. Disciplinary action includes mandatory loss of work and counseling, covered by the local’s medical carrier.
Under the leadership of Dressel, Local 164 has secured key contracts for several projects, including Prudential Center in Newark, Secaucus Transfer Station in Secaucus, and Xanadu in East Rutherford.
