JERSEY CITY--DMR Architects has been tapped to redesign the historic Paramount building as part of a larger adaptive reuse project in Jersey City known as the Beacon, being developed by Metrovest Equities.
The site was built as the Jersey City Medical Center during the Great Depression and is New Jersey’s largest example of art deco architecture.
The Paramount is part of the second phase of the project and will include 208 residential units, a gym spanning the entire basement level and the preservation of an existing art deco theater. The Beacon complex is expected to be completed in 2010 and will ultimately include 1,200 residential units, parks, shops, screening rooms and a museum devoted to the Jersey City Medical Center. The development is expected to cost $350 million and will generate a substantial new investment into the Jersey City community once completed.
The Paramount, formerly known as Murdoch Hall, was the last of the medical center buildings to be completed. It first served as the nurses’ quarters and features terrazzo floors, marble lobbies, and glass and brass railings, as well as terra-cotta engravings. The lobby of the building has played host to a handful of movies throughout the years, including the Robert Redford directed “Quiz Show.”
The firm’s designs for the Paramount are complete. Construction at the site is expected to begin in 2009.
