NEWARK--The City of Newark has won the New Jersey Concrete Committee’s Merit Award in the Decorative Category for the first phase of the Broad Street Streetscaping, which saw massive renovations of the historic “Four Corners” intersection at Broad and Market Streets.
The project reconstructed sidewalks, created fence panels, installed new street furniture and traffic lights to promote pedestrian safety. In addition, the project re-paved both the intersection and sidewalks at Broad and Market Streets with decorative designs to denote the historic nature of the “Four Corners” intersection.
The award will be presented to the City of Newark at the 45th Annual New Jersey Concrete Awards Dinner tonight, at the Hyatt Regency in New Brunswick. A video presentation of the award-winning projects, including Newark’s, will be shown at the dinner.
The $7 million project was funded by the Federal Highway Administration, the New Jersey Department of Transportation, and the New Jersey Department of Commerce. Construction is now beginning on the second phase of the Streetscaping, from Clinton Avenue to Cedar Place. The improvements will stretch approximately three miles. Phases three and four will cover City Hall to the I-280 overpass. The north end of Broad Street will be renovated in phase five.
