NEWARK--Mayor Cory A. Booker announced today that the City of Newark is planning to install guardrails on a section of Raymond Boulevard alongside the Passaic River from Freeman Street to Somme Street.
The intention of this decision is to increase driver and pedestrian safety on a stretch of road where two separate accidents have claimed four lives during the past 10 years.
According to Acting Engineering Director Mehdi Mohammadish, there will be “minimal impact” on traffic during construction, which will commence on or about May 15, and be finished in July. The new guardrails will be made of rubber and galvanized steel.
The contractor for the project is M.L. Ruberton of Hammond, New Jersey. The estimated cost of $200,000 is provided from the Department of Engineering’s capital budget.
